Consultant's Guide to Year-End Planning
Consultant's Guide to Year-End Planning
December isn't just about closing open projects. It's your opportunity to reflect on the year, optimize what worked, and set up next year for success.
Here's your year-end planning checklist.
Financial Review
Revenue Analysis
- Total revenue: How much did you actually bill?
- Revenue by client: Who are your biggest clients?

Action: Identify your top 3 revenue drivers. Double down on those next year.
Profitability Check
- Gross margin: Revenue minus direct costs
- Net margin: After overhead and taxes
- Effective hourly rate: Revenue ÷ hours worked (be honest)
- Which projects were most profitable? (and which were dogs)
Action: Set a minimum profitability threshold for next year's projects.
Cash Flow
- Cash on hand: Do you have 3-6 months of runway?
- Outstanding receivables: Who owes you money?
- Upcoming expenses: Any big payments coming?
- Tax obligations: Set aside Q4 estimated payments
Action: Chase any outstanding invoices before year-end.
